What is prolotherapy?
Prolotherapy is a treatment that consists of injections with a proliferating solution, named for its cell proliferative power; applied to the ligaments, tendons, muscles and the joint capsules of the bones; that stimulates the organism for the growth of strong and healthy tissues, forming collagen and elastic fibers, which restores normal stability, mobility and lasting healing of pain.
Why is it done?
Ligaments and tendons are made up of connective tissue. Its function is to stabilize the joints and attach the muscles to the bones. Hence, it is essential that the ligaments and tendons remain healthy. Because ligaments and tendons are hypovascular tissues with little blood supply, the body's own ability to repair the tissues may be limited. In addition, although they are semi-elastic fabrics that are very resistant to traction, they can suffer injuries and be weakened by problems in the biomechanics of the body or overuse (typical in athletes).
Some of the causes or problems to receive prolotherapy are:
- Achilles tendinosis
- Patellar tendinosis or quadriceps tendinosis
- Trochanteric bursitis
- Epicondylosis or tennis elbow
- Epitrochleosis or golfer's elbow
- Rotator cuff tendinosis
- Tendinosis of the supraspinatus tendon
- Chronic ankle and knee sprains
- Partial ligament tears
- Pubalgias (adductor or abdominal tendinosis)
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Osteoarthritis
- Knee osteoarthritis or winthrosis
- Hip osteoarthritis or coxarthrosis
- Plantar fasciitis
- Lumbalgia, cervicalgia and back pain
- Headaches of muscle-tendon-ligament origin
- Sacroiliac dysfunction
Preparation for prolotherapy
Prior to the application of prolotherapy, it is necessary to carry out a detailed study of the problems that you suffer from. Thus, a good clinical diagnosis must be made and complemented by imaging (X-ray, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound, etc.) The exact location of placement of the substance must also be known, so, sometimes, it will be necessary to do so with an ultrasound guide.
It is also important to bear in mind that, together with prolotherapy, it is necessary to correct biomechanical factors that caused damage to the joint, tendon or ligament: overweight, poor posture, poor sports performance, postural imbalances, etc.
